What could be better than spending a long weekend photographing some of the best waterfalls in New York?  Photographing them in the Autumn color!  This weekend workshop will be dedicated to the techniques involved with photographing waterfalls in the Finger Lakes Region near Ithaca, NY.  On Saturday & Sunday, we will go into the field to shoot a number of my favorite local waterfalls, including, but not limited to Watkins Glen, Buttermilk Falls, Lucifer Falls, and Taughannock Falls.   We will visit several well-known and lesser known waterfalls across the Finger Lakes Region, and end with a group critique on Monday.

Colin has been photographing waterfalls in upstate New York for more than a dozen years, and waterfalls have been a particular specialty since the rainy summer of 2009.  He has had several local gallery shows, including a one person show of his waterfalls photography at the Catskill Watershed Corporation in Margaretville.  Check out his new blog post on waterfalls photography at LightandPhotoBlog.com

Date and Times:

Friday, Oct 11 at 5pm thru approx. Monday, Oct 14 at 1pm.

Where to Meet:

Ithaca, NY.  Exact location to be announced soon!

What to bring:
  • A digital or film camera capable of manual exposure settings.  Due to the short time frame of the workshop, people with digital cameras, especially digital SLR cameras, will get the most from the workshop.
  • A sturdy tripod is essential for taking the long exposures necessary for capturing waterfalls.
  • A circular polarizing lens.  Bring all your favorite filters, but if you do not already own one, please pick up a circular polarizing filter for at least your favorite lens.  There will be a formal on-site demo on how to control reflections and glare on water using a circular polarizer.
  • Hiking boots: while the hikes to the falls we will visit will be fairly short (typically 1-2 miles), a good set of waterproof hiking boots is good for protecting the ankles on rocky trails and slippery rocks, and allow you to get to better shooting positions in or near streams and below the falls.
  • Your own method of transportation.  We will carpool to the falls as much as possible.

Skills Needed
All skill levels are welcome.  Participants who have a basic understanding of digital workflow and knowledge or exposure to Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom will get the most from this workshop.

Other Considerations

Though locations visited during this workshop are readily accessible, the hilly terrain requires some moderate hiking. Participants MUST be in good physical shape and able to climb and descend moderate to steep inclines and stairs. They should wear sturdy boots and use caution on slippery and rocky slopes.

Program Schedule:
Rather than adhering to a set itinerary, we will stay flexible so that we optimize our time in the field, giving you the best chances to capture great images based on weather and lighting conditions. We plan to photograph throughout the day. After dinner, we’ll head back to our Phoenicia base for instructional sessions.

     Friday

Participants arrive in Ithaca. Kick-off dinner at a local restaurant, followed by an opening presentation on various techniques and strategies for taking beautiful photographs of waterfalls and flowing water.

     Saturday & Sunday

Morning field trip to one or two waterfalls location. Lunch break.  Afternoon field trip.   Dinner break.  Evening indoor instruction sessions and image processing.

     Monday

Morning field trip followed by breakfast.  Group slide show and critique session, and workshop wrap-up.

(Schedule may vary considerably depending on weather and other factors)

Meals:

Meals are the responsibility of the participant and their cost is not included in the registration fee. We will work with the group to organize meal times and locations.

Lodging:

Lodging is the responsibility of the participant and is not included in the registration fee.  There will be a few options available at the vacation rental home near Ithaca we will use as our base.  I will post those details here as I know them

The workshop will happen rain or shine.  As you can imagine, rain can bring out the best conditions for capturing a great waterfall image!
