Spend 5 days exploring glacier-fed waterfalls, alpine lakes and night skies from 12,000' in rugged Rocky Mountain National Park.   We will explore the Wild Basin, Glacier Gorge, Dream and Emerald Lakes, Trail Ridge Road, and other lovely locations inside and outside the park, high in the Rocky Mountains.

Colin will share his various techniques and strategies for taking beautiful photographs of waterfalls and flowing water.  Check out his blog post: How to Photograph Waterfalls Like a Pro.

The workshop is scheduled near the new moon, so we will also spend at least one night high on Trail Ridge Road - which at 12,000' of elevation has some of the best views of the night sky in the Front Range.

NOTE:  This workshop will involve 3-7 miles of rugged hiking per day at 8,000-11,000′ elevations.  Participants MUST be in EXCELLENT PHYSICAL SHAPE.  If you are coming from sea level, plan to come a couple of days early to acclimatize yourself to the high elevations.

Skills Needed:

All skill levels are welcome.  Participants who have a basic understanding of digital workflow and knowledge or exposure to Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom will get the most from this workshop.

COVID Policy

New for 2022, I am requiring all participants to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (a booster is suggested but not required), or present evidence of a negative Covid-19 test no less than 72 hours before the workshop.

Field lessons will include tips and techniques for:
  • Capturing moving water in photographs
  • How to create the silky, long exposure waterfall effect
  • Reading and shooting the light
  • Varying shutter speed for creative effect
  • Utilizing filters to improve artistic results
  • Using your tripod to capture longer exposures and greater depth of field
  • How to photograph the Milky Way
Indoor instructional presentations will include:
  • Tips & techniques for photography waterfalls and moving water
  • Adobe Lightroom workflow for getting the most from your images

Rock Cut Milky Way
What to bring:
  • A digital or film camera capable of manual exposure settings.  Due to the short time frame of the workshop, people with digital cameras, especially digital SLR cameras, will get the most from the workshop.
  •  A sturdy tripod is essential for capturing the long exposures necessary to capture waterfalls and streams.
  • Your favorite filters, but if you do not already own one, please pick up a circular polarizing filter for at least your favorite lens.  There will be a formal on-site demo on how to control reflections and glare on water using a circular polarizer.  A graduated neutral density filter can also be useful for sunrises.
  •  A wide angle lens capable of shooting f/3.5 aperture or faster for capturing the Milky Way
  • Hiking boots: we will be hiking 3-5 miles a day, and a good set of waterproof hiking boots is good for protecting the ankles on rocky trails and slippery rocks, and allow you to get to better shooting positions in or near streams and below the falls.  Hiking sticks can also be useful.
  • Your own method of transportation.  We will carpool to locations as possible.
Group Size:   The workshop will be limited to 8 photographers
